Tragedy has befallen a Dupree, South Dakota High School, as a student involved in a basketball practice collapsed and died on Monday.

KSFY TV is reporting the incident took place on the evening of Monday (December 2) during the Dupree High School team's first practice of the season.

Ziebach County Sheriff Gary Cudmore told KSFY, the team was in the process of performing a series of routine wind sprints when the boy collapsed on the court.

According to Cudmore, school coaches and nurses performed CPR on the student until Indian Health Service paramedics from Eagle Butte arrived on the scene.

KSFY reports the student was then transported by ambulance to a hospital in Eagle Butte for treatment, where he later died.

An investigation is currently underway by Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement officials.
