Study: South Dakota, Iowa Have Some of the Most Expensive Coffee
What a difference 31 months makes.
In December of 2021, a nationwide study showed that the price of a cup of coffee in South Dakota was slightly below the national average by nearly 20 cents - $2.32 compared to $2.50.
However, according to a recent study by the same group, there's been a major change in what people in the Mount Rushmore State are now paying for their daily caffeine fix.
SavingSpot, in conjunction with CashNetUSA, says the price of a cup of coffee in South Dakota is now the highest in America.
Using MenuWithPrice data from 21,965 coffee spots around the country, the numbers show that the price of a cup of coffee in South Dakota has skyrocketed by more than 60 percent (63.36%) to a whopping $3.79, and neighboring Iowa isn't too far behind with the eighth-priciest cup of joe.
MOST EXPENSIVE COFFEE IN AMERICA (average price per cup)
- South Dakota: $3.79
- Wyoming: $3.75
- Hawaii: $3.63
- South Carolina: $3.59
- Oregon: $3.51
- New Hampshire: $3.50
- Nevada: $3.47
- Iowa: $3.41
- North Dakota: $3.40
- Alaska: $3.38
Coffee prices in Minnesota are downright cheap compared to South Dakota and Iowa. You'll pay $3.01 in the North Star State, which is well below the national average ($3.20).
Maine is the cheapest state to buy a cup of coffee, with an average price of $2.60.
The huge price increase is due to fluctuations in the coffee crops worldwide, as well as energy costs, and the labor supply. It's not just in the upper Midwest, the study found that the average price of grocery store coffee beans is 22% more than three years ago.
Those higher prices don't seem to be impacting our demand for caffeine. Americans still spend $110 billion per year on coffee.
