Prediction: Get Ready For A Scorching Summer In South Dakota
The Old Farmer's Almanac has released its summer forecast and South Dakotans should be ready for a hot and dry season.
With that said, keep in mind that long-range forecasts can be tricky to predict, but the Old Farmer's Almanac has been overall quite accurate. Before diving in, it looks like the entire United States is in for a scorcher of a summer.
You can check out the official 2025 map here but basically a very hot and dry pattern settles over much of the country with the exception of the northeast corner of the US where cool and dry conditions are forecast and the upper Great Lakes region where hot and rainy conditions will prevail.
"July and August will bring above-normal temperatures across most regions, with only a few exceptions. Given recent trends, we wouldn’t be surprised to see record-breaking heat." Old Farmer's Almanac, 2025 Summer Predictions
The Heartland states should be 4 degrees above normal with "slightly below normal" rainfall.
South Dakota farmers would rather not see hot and dry conditions for the summer but keep in mind that long-range forecasts are not always accurate. But with the trends of warmer weather it's best to be prepared and make sure irrigation methods are in place.
It's always a good idea to make sure your home's air conditioning is in good shape by scheduling a professional inspection so you're not waiting for a service call in a sweltering situation.
Hang out in the shade as much as possible, hydration is key, light, breathable clothing, carrying a frozen water bottle, and cold showers are all good ideas.
