Macy’s to Close More Stores. Is Sioux Falls Location on the List?

These continue to be tough times for some of America's best-known retail brands.

Axios is reporting that retail giant Macy's will start 2023 by closing four additional stores, on top of the nearly 50 locations that have been shut down since the end of 2019.

But as it has several times in the past, the Sioux Falls location inside the Empire Mall will survive the latest round of closings.

Foothills Mall - Fort Collins, Colorado
Windward Center - Kaneohe, Hawaii
Lakeforest Mall - Gaithersburg, Maryland

Macy's first opened its doors on Sixth Avenue in New York City in October of 1858.

By 2014, the chain had nearly 800 locations in the United States. Nine years later, fewer than 500 stores remain.

The good news about the Sioux Falls Macy's location comes on the heels of a dire prediction by one Wall Street analyst that another chain with a Sioux Falls store is in danger of shutting its doors in 2023.

For thirty years the people of Sioux Falls saw the sign for Gordmans off-price department store across the parking lot from the Empire Mall.

In September of 2020, the store closed for its final time. Since then the building has sat empty, something that doesn't happen too often in Sioux Falls.

We were wondering what people in Sioux Falls would like to see take over the space. Some folks wanted their Gordmans back. It was a great place to find deals on clothing. But, all the Gordmans are gone, so that's a no-go.

And since we've gotten our Chick Fil A and Chipotle, the city is primed for another thing to line up for.
