
Clothing Chain Closes Stores; Sioux Falls Location Spared for Now
A women's clothing retailer with a Sioux Falls location has already closed a massive number of stores in the last few years and might not be done.
According to The Street, value-priced women’s fashion chain Cato Corporation has closed 246 stores since 2022 and plans to shutter more in 2026.
During the first quarter of this year, the Charlotte, North Carolina-based retailer closed six stores. As of the beginning of May, Cato operated 1,065 stores in 31 states, compared to 1,109 as of May of last year. The chain has been closing about 60 stores on average per year since 2022.

Of the locations that remains open for now is South Dakota's lone store, on East Arrowhead Parkway in Sioux Falls.
Cato dates back to 1946, when the company founder, Wayland Cato, left United Merchants to launch his own business in Charlotte with his sons, Wayland Henry Cato, Jr., and Edgar Thomas.
The company went public in 1968, took itself private in 1980, then went public again in 1987. Early in the 1990s, the business avoided bankruptcy by implementing a new discount pricing strategy and updating its inventory
