In the midst of the land-locked Midwest, Luverne, Minnesota has been selected for a new $50 million shrimp production facility.

Among the the cities considered for the facility, officials with the Lewis and Clark Regional Water System say Luverne was seen as favorable due to the quality of water from the newly established water system, which was established in 2016.

The company, Tru̅ Shrimp says construction is slated to start in early 2018.

Lewis & Clark Board Chairman Red Arndt of Luverne remarked in a press release:

“I have been told flat out that without the Lewis & Clark connection there is simply no way Luverne could have competed for a harbor.  One of the main reasons we are constructing water project is to provide the member communities and rural water systems with expanded economic development opportunities, particularly when it comes to value-added agriculture, so we couldn’t be more pleased with this announcement.  This exciting news will hopefully provide momentum to connect the remaining members as soon as possible.”

According to the release, construction of the harbor facility will create 330 jobs with an economic impact of $48 million.  Once established, the annual economic impact is estimated to be $23 million.
