Road Work: What are They Doing on I-229 Near Cliff Ave in Sioux Falls?
If you live to work on the east side of Sioux Falls you've probably driven through some construction on I-229 this July.
As of July 16, the road construction isn't too disruptive to traffic, just a drop in the speed limit for a few miles around the Cliff Avenue exit. And the inside shoulders of both the northbound and southbound lanes are closed.

What Are They Doing on I-229 in Sioux Falls?
Right now when you go through the construction zone, you'll see some big machines digging up the grassy median between the lanes of traffic.
According to the South Dakota Department of Transportation, it is a median crossover construction project.
They are getting the area ready for a bigger project, the reconstruction of the Cliff Avenue interchange by building a temporary bridge for traffic during the reconstruction and widening the lanes.
"This project includes the modification of the median crossovers with a temporary structure in preparation for the 2025 interchange reconstruction. This project also includes the temporary widening of Interstate 229 northbound," the SD DOT said in a press release.
The growth of the Sioux Falls metro area drives the work on I-229. More people means more traffic, and officials want to ensure that the main artery of Sioux Falls can handle more traffic safely. It's a project similar to the work done on the 26th Street exit a few years ago.
