In a world where the bigger the construction project the longer the delays seem to be the norm, one massive road project in and around Sioux Falls is bucking that trend.

According to a recent report by Construction Equipment Guide, work on the first phase of the $210 million South Veterans Parkway project is running ahead of schedule.

Recently, work on the parkway, which will eventually link I-29 and I-90, hit these milestones on Segment 1 (Western Avenue to Cliff Avenue):

  • Lane closures on Minnesota Avenue are no longer in place
  • Western Avenue, south of 95th Street, is progressing forward with sidewalk, landscaping and street light work
  • The roundabout construction at Western Avenue and 95th Street is complete

Work has now moved into the area of Western Avenue and 95th Street where the intersection is closed for roundabout construction, while Western remains closed to 271st Street (County Road 106).

If things continues to go as planned, the first vehicles should be traveling on the Western to Cliff segment of the project before the original November 1 completion date.

Here's what's still to come on the South Veterans Parkway timetable:

  • Segment 2: I-29 to Western Avenue
    Construction Timeline: Construction anticipated 2025 - 2026
  • Segment 3: Cliff Avenue to Sycamore Avenue
    Construction Timeline: Construction anticipated 2025 - 2026.
  • Segment 4: Sycamore Avenue to 57th Street
    Construction Timeline: Construction anticipated 2026 - 2027

In 2020, the South Dakota Transportation Commission approved the plans to complete construction of the remaining 8.7 miles that make up the southern section of Veterans Parkway from Interstate 29 to 57th Street. The first road segment from Western Avenue to Cliff Avenue broke ground in spring 2023.

The new roadway will consist of three lanes per direction with a 32-foot raised median separating the travel lanes, a shared-use path along the south side of the Parkway, and a grass boulevard separating the path from the roadway.

The South Veterans Parkway project is a partnership with the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) and the City of Sioux Falls.

Standing Where South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota Meet

Wanna stand in three states at once? You can do just that at the Tri-State Iron Monument just outside the city of Valley Springs, South Dakota.

It's a simple monument, but it's neat to know so much history lies in the area. You just have to know where to look.
