DETOUR ALERT: Major Sioux Falls Street Preparing for Lengthy Closure
Drivers in Southeast Sioux Falls will be scrambling to get where they are going for the next several weeks.
Where is the work being done?
Starting Tuesday (May 27), Cliff Avenue will be closed to all traffic from north of the existing northbound Interstate 229 exit ramps to 38th Street.
According to the South Dakota Department of Transportation, the closure is needed for the contractor to reconstruct this portion of Cliff Avenue and the Lincoln High School parking lot.
Detour details
Drivers will be provided a detour utilizing 33rd Street, 57th Street, and Minnesota Avenue to navigate around the work zone.
Lenghty closure
The closure will be in effect until mid-August.
Once reopened, traffic will be restored in one lane, both northbound and southbound.

Project overview
This closure is part of a larger overall project that will reconstruct I-229 exit 4 (Cliff Avenue) and includes lighting, signals, mainline Interstate work, two structure replacements, and median crossovers. Motorists are reminded to use caution and reduce their speed while workers and equipment are present.
The $48 million project is expected to be completed in June of 2027.
