South Dakota Teen Attempts to Set World Record by Flying Solo Around Globe

An Aberdeen, South Dakota teen is attempting to enter the Guinness Book of World Records by embarking on a journey that could make him the youngest pilot to ever fly solo around the globe.

Matt Guthmiller took off from San Diego, Ca. Saturday, May 31st, and scheduled his first stop back home in Aberdeen to see family. From there, it was wheels up and he arrived Teterboro Airport in New Jersey Monday.

Guthmiller,19, has to complete his journey by July 24 to beat the record currently held by Australian Ryan Campbell. However, Steve Fossett was the first person to fly solo around the world nonstop in 2005.

He has landings scheduled in exciting locales such as Cairo, Athens, and Rome.
Matt will be making 25 stops in 14 different countries across five continents during his month-long journey.

Guthmiller’s flight will include a money-raising campaign for Code.org, a charity for computer science education. He plans to land in Aberdeen with a Guinness world record in the first week of July. You can track his progress and keep up-to-date on this epic adventure here.
