Wienermobile History

The very first Wienermobile dates back to 1936 and has become so famous that it has its own Wikipedia page with fun facts like:

  • Six Wienermobiles are operating throughout the United States
  • The driver of a Wienermobile is called 'The Hotdogger'
  • Since 1995, the Wienermobiles have been 27 feet long and 11 feet tall
  • In 2004, the Wienermobile was upgraded to include a voice-activated GPS navigation device, an audio center with a wireless microphone, and a horn that plays the Oscar Mayer Wiener Jingle
  • On May 14, 2023, it was announced that the Wienermobile would be renamed the Frankmobile (four months later, this unpopular name change was reversed)

The company dates back to 1873 when 14-year-old Oscar F. Mayer moved from Bavaria to America. Starting as a butcher's boy, he eventually landed a job in a Detroit meatpacking plant.

Ten years later, he started his first butcher shop in Chicago and made $59 on the first day - the equivalent of $1,800 today.
