That pesky confusing bi-annual tradition of Daylight Saving Time is once again quickly approaching. On March 9, 2025, South Dakotans - and most states - will observe the practice of setting our clocks ahead (remember: "spring ahead" in Spring and "fall back" in Fall) one hour. Twice per year we try to figure out alarm clocks, microwave clocks, and coffee makers to adjust to the new time.

While many are in support of doing away with the practice altogether it appears South Dakota will observe Daylight Saving Time once again. Some may not know that a “daylight protection act” bill was introduced in Washington, but not surprisingly, has stalled for years.

Now, it appears North Dakota may go their own way and would eliminate Daylight Saving Time altogether in the Peace Garden State. A bill recently passed the North Dakota House 55-37 to end the practice. But what would that mean to surrounding states who still use Daylight Saving Time?

Well, for one, southwest North Dakota is on Mountain Time, and will differ in time to neighboring Montana and South Dakota by an hour...and 9 counties would be in their own little time zone. Pretty confusing. Also pointed out in a recent Facebook post, in the peak of summer the sun would come up around 4:35 in the morning and it would start getting dark just after 8:30 PM!

Perhaps North Dakota should take a step back and adopt the 3 Musketeers motto of "all for one and one for all" and hold on to their horses until congress moves on the “daylight protection act”. But we all know how quick and efficient Washington moves on stuff :)
