New I-29 Interchange Opening Soon in South Dakota
Drivers in South Dakota will soon have another option to enter and exit Interstate 29.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation has announced that the 20th Street Interchange on I-29 is scheduled to open on Saturday (July 29), in Brookings.
Northbound and southbound I-29 on and off-ramps will be opened that day, as well as the 20th Street mainline through the city of Brookings.
SDOT is advising motorists to be aware that permanent signage installations along I-29 will continue over the coming weeks and may require periodic Interstate single-lane closures. A reduced speed limit of 65 miles per hour will remain in effect until all permanent signs are installed.
According to SDOT, Brookings has been considering a new I-29 interchange at 20th Street for nearly 20 years. The project became a reality after a 2019 Department of Transportation grant was received.
The $15.3 million dollar project officially began in the winter of 2022.
