Breaking: Macy’s Will Close 150 Stores
Macy's has announced it will be closing up to 150 stores in the very near future.
Will the anchor Macy's store in the Sioux Falls Empire Mall anchor store be included? The short answer is: Not sure...yet.
The company did not say which locations are closing but will begin notifying certain stores on Tuesday of pending closures.
The move is part of the company's strategy to stay profitable, according to the New York Times. The move includes selling off large stores and creating smaller brick and motor stores focusing on their luxury brands such as Bluemercury and Bloomingdale's.
The timetable is still not finalized but according to the Macy's Inc. press release, the iconic department store plans to shutter roughly 50 stores this year and the rest by the end of 2026.
Macy's began in the year 1858 making it one of the world's oldest retail chains. It's flagship store is located in New York City and has sponsored the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for 100 years, beginning in 1924.
