Tis the season for all things spooky and scary with Halloween coming up quickly on the calendar. But if you're hoping to have the most frightful encounters possible a lot of it depends on where you live.

Recently, Freepik sought to find the most haunted states in America, and to do so they used data from a variety of sources to work out which are home to the most ghost sightings and haunted locations.

In the Tri-State area, there was plenty to report from two states.

South Dakota checked in with 8.16 haunted places per 100,000 people, which is the fourth highest in America. As for ghost sightings per 100,000 people, the Mount Rushmore State's 46.6 also was number four among all 50 states.

The paranormal activity levels are just about as high in Iowa. The Hawkeye State's haunted places ranking (5.27) and ghost sightings (33.24) both landed in the Top Ten nationally.

'Minnesota Nice' is apparently a powerful tool to ward off evil spirits. The North Star State landed in the bottom half of haunted states with 2.82 haunted places (tied for 32nd) and 19.38 ghost sightings (tied for 28th).

According to the study, Wyoming is the most haunted state overall, with 13 haunted places and 37.3 ghost sightings reported per 100,000 people.

Ghosts don't seem to want to spend time in Florida, where there have only been 7.9 ghost sightings for every 100,000 residents, and just 1.5 haunted places reported.

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
