Folks in a lot of places around America have noticed that they're paying more for a number of things these days, especially at the grocery store checkout.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's report on the Consumer Price Index, the cost of groceries saw a 25% increase from 2019 to 2023, thanks in part to supply chain disruptions and consumer behavior due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

And while things are slowly getting back to normal on grocery store shelves, a lot of Americans are still feeling the pinch during their weekly grocery runs.

The latest numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau show U.S. households are spending an average of $270.21 per week on groceries, but that varies widely depending on where you're doing your shopping.

Across the Tri-State Area (South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota), grocery bills are below that average by nearly 15 dollars or more. In fact, one local state is among the cheapest in the country.

Iowa's weekly average grocery tab of $227.32 is more than $40 below the national standard and trails only Wisconsin ($221.46) as having the cheapest supermarket items in America.

Minnesota's weekly tab at the grocery store (Minnesota: $250.56) is the 15th lowest in the U.S., while South Dakota is just below the national average ($256.48) at number 22 overall.

People in the two states with the highest shipping costs - Hawaii and Alaska - pay at least $100 more per week than shoppers in Iowa.
