Big Problems for Joey Logano’s Win at Richmond
It was a big deal to have a race winner fight his way past all the competitors after starting in the back of the field in Sunday's NASCAR race at Richmond, Virginia. We watched Joey Logano put on a display of driving for his first win of the year.
He was penalized before the race for changing transmissions after qualifying, and that's why he started at the back. Now major penalties come after the race.
Thursday morning NASCAR ruled Logano's victory “encumbered” and therefore will not count toward qualifying him for a playoff spot after the first 26 races that constitute the regular season.
A post race teardown of the winning car at NASCAR Research Center, found a rear suspension violation. Logano will be docked 25 driver points and number 22 Team Penske will be hit with a 25 owner point penalty.
Logano's Crew Chief, Todd Gordon, was fined $50,000 and suspended for two races. Logano's win on Sunday will remain counted in the record books.
