Austin Dillon Wins NASCAR Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway
Austin Dillion managed to just make it to the finish line and win before running out of fuel. The engine started sputtering a second after the checkered flag.
Dillon only led the final two laps of the race. He passed Jimmie Johnson with under three laps to go, when Johnson ran out of gas.
To make it even more exciting, it was the first time the #3 Chevrolet was in victory lane since the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr. won in 2000.
The winning car is owned by Dillon's grandfather, Richard Childress, who retired the number 3 after Earnhardt's tragic death at the 2001 Daytona 500. The number was brought back for Dillion's first full Cup season in 2014.
As eight of the fastest cars pitted late in the race, Dillon stayed out on the track. He conserved enough fuel to get the win, however they had to push the car to victory lane after running empty.
The race was delayed over an hour and a half because of rain.
