Try to picture more lanes, smoother roads and the breeze of driving on 49th Street after construction is done.  Before that gleeful drive, there's the pain of road construction and closures first.

49th Street just west of Louise Avenue will be closed on Monday (April 10). Major upgrades to the underground utilities and storm drainage will be underway through July, as long as South Dakota weather doesn't slow things down.

The Detour

Look for signs on 57th Street via Solberg Avenue and Oxbow Avenue. A temporary traffic light will be located at 53rd and Louise, taking you through Technology Drive and Valhalla Boulevard to 49th Street.

Louise Avenue and Businesses Stay Open

All traffic on Louise avenue will continue, with traffic in both directions on the east side of the road.  Access to businesses will be maintained at all times.

The City of Sioux Falls says the closure is part of a bigger project:

The reconstruction of South Louise Avenue is the flagship street construction project for 2017. South Louise Avenue will be reconstructed from West 41st Street to West 49th Street, including the intersection of 49th Street and Louise Avenue. The current five-lane street will be widened to six lanes and include a median with left-turn lanes at select intersections throughout the corridor. The project also will include adaptive traffic signals to help with traffic flow, new LED streetlights to increase safety, and underground utility infrastructure upgrades.

More than 39,000 vehicles a day travel through the intersection of 49th Street and Louise Avenue.
