Watch Race Accident That Kills IndyCar Driver Justin Wilson
IndyCar driver Justin Wilson has died from a head injury suffered when a piece of debris from another vehicle struck him during Sunday's race at Pocono Raceway. The track is located in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.
Wilson's vehicle veered into an interior wall at the track. Safety workers immediately arrived and frantically worked to extricate Wilson from the No. 25 Andretti Autosport Honda.
Wilson was immediately transported by helicopter to the area hospital. It was announced Sunday night that he was in a coma and in critical condition.
An announcement came Monday afternoon that his condition was the same. Then Monday evening word came of his death.
IndyCar drivers are far more susceptible to head injuries because the cockpits are open and their helmets exposed. Wilson was 37 and is survived by his wife and two children.
Wilson is the first IndyCar driver to die because of an on-track accident since Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon in the 2011 season finale at Las Vegas.
