Two Iowa Airports Now Offer TSA Self-Service Security Screenings
New technology being tested at a select number of airports around the country could cut down on your time spent going through security.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has rolled out self-service machines using biometric technologies to confirm passengers' identities.
The new feature will give travelers the opportunity to either insert their ID or scan their passports at the kiosk. The machine will then take a photo to verify that the travel documents inserted match those of the person traveling. It will also confirm their flight information and indicate if they are eligible for a standard screening or expedited with TSA Pre-check.
After completing that process, passengers head to baggage screening.
Biometrics have already been in programs like CLEAR, which can scan eyes or fingerprints for identification at airports and select venues.
The first self-serve machines appeared at Ronald Reagan International in Washington DC in August of 2020. Since then, TSA has expanded the use of the kiosks to 24 other airports, including two in Iowa, Des Moines International Airport (DSM) and Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in Cedar Rapids.
