South Dakota State Fair's Sensory Friendly Experience Returning

When the 136th South Dakota State Fair begins next month in Huron, it will continue to be as welcoming a place for as many visitors as possible.

With that in mind, the fair has announced the return of the Sensory Friendly Experience on Wednesday, September 2, from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, marking its second year of providing a welcoming experience for children and adults with sensory sensitivities.

During the Sensory Friendly Experience, fairgoers can expect:

Reduced noise and lights
Gentle animal interactions in a quiet, controlled space
A peaceful, calming cottage to rest, reset, and recharge
Interactive, hands-on sensory activities for all ages and abilities
Fun and accessible scavenger hunt
Specially modified carnival time

Also, new this year, Momentum Refresh will be joining us to help eliminate barriers for individuals who need mobility assistance.

Momentum Refresh is a fully accessible mobile restroom and universal changing station. This ADA-compliant unit includes a height-adjustable adult changing table, lift system, spacious design for caregivers, and professional staff to ensure a clean, safe, and dignified experience for all.

The 2026 South Dakota State Fair kicks off Wednesday, September 2, and runs through Monday, September 7.

The fair dates back to 1885 and has called Huron home since 1905.
