In the ultimate ironic twist, we are just three days into what is recognized each year as National Safety Month, but a number of Americans have never felt as unsafe as they have in the first few days of June 2020 with COVID-19 still prevalent and rioting in the streets of a number of American cities.

According to the latest safety numbers released by the personal-finance website WalletHub, there is some good news and some bad news for South Dakota when it comes to safety.

The state has the fewest murders and non-negligent manslaughters per 100,000 residents (1.36), which is more than eight times lower than Louisiana, which tops the list in that category (11.37).

But the Mount Rushmore didn't fare so well in the overall rankings, checking in at 40th overall on the safe state list.

The biggest category dragging the state down is workplace safety. South Dakota has the fifth-most fatal occupational injuries per total workers.

The state was among the leaders in financial safety (11th overall), which factors in things like credit scores and foreclosures, near the middle of the pack in road safety (25th), and personal and residential safety (27th).
