Smoke From Canadian Wildfires Triggers Air Quality Alert In South Dakota
What was beginning to shape up as a fairly mild weekend weather-wise across South Dakota has now turned into a potentially dangerous situation for some state residents.
Ongoing wildfires in Canada have prompted the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources to issue an air quality alert for areas of the state.
The alert will remain in place until Sunday (July 13) or until conditions improve.
More Than 10 Million Acres Burned
There are 160 different wildfires active across Canada, pimarily in Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan. So far this year, more than ten million acres of land has been impacted North of the border.

Health Concerns
Here, the smoke from those fires may cause low visibility and increased fine particulate matter pollution. The South Dakota Department of Health advises that these levels may be a concern to public health and provides additional resources to make an informed decision on personal healthcare choices.
Air pollution can aggravate heart and cardiovascular disease as well as lung diseases like asthma and COPD. When the air quality is unhealthy, people with these conditions may experience symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, or fatigue. Anyone concerned about health effects related to poor air quality should contact their health care provider.

Who is at Risk?
The most vulnerable to the effects of the smoke are the elderly, young children, and individuals with respiratory problems. Health experts say everyone should avoid excessive physical exertion and minimize outdoor activities during periods of low visibility caused by the wildfire smoke. People are also encouraged to keep indoor air clean by closing windows and doors.
