Without a doubt, one of the best things you can say about a place is that it is a good environment to raise children.

South Dakota is one of those special places.

According to a new study by Go Au Pair, which examined child well-being across all 50 states in terms of economic stability, education outcomes, health indicators, and home environments, South Dakota is among America's ten best states for kids.

Using numbers from the Annie E. Casey Foundation Data Center, National Assessment of Educational Progress, and Kaiser Family Foundation, among others, rankings and scores were calculated based on these categories:

  • Parental unemployment
  • Median family income
  • Children living in crowded housing
  • Child and teen death rate
  • Children and teens with anxiety or depression
  • 4th-grade math and reading scores
  • Children without health insurance
  • Child obesity
  • Percentage of children living in households with smokers

South Dakota checks in at number ten, largely due to the lowest parental unemployment rate in the country at just 1%. The state also had the lowest percentage of kids with anxiety or depression among the top ten states. Education outcomes were also respectable, with a score of 240 in math (9th grade).
