A decade before South Dakota became a state, the relationship with the Ingalls family began.

The year was 1879, and Charles Ingalls was looking to relocate his family from Walnut Grove, Minnesota, to the Dakota Territory, where he filed for a formal homestead in DeSmet.

The family later moved there, and daughter Laura eventually began her own family after marrying Almanzo Wilder in 1885. The Wilders stayed in DeSmet until moving to Mansfield, Missouri in 1894.

The story of Laura's 15 years in DeSmet are carried on to this day with tours of the family's homestead and other homes, as well as an annual pagent.

The adventures of the Ingalls/Wilder families is best remembered as the backdrop for the NBC-TV series Little House on the Prairie, which ran for nine seaons, from September, 1974 to March, 1983.
