When you enter the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill there are eyes on what's in your trailer or pickup load of refuse.

Some things, for the safety of others and environmental concerns, are not allowed to be tossed in the landfill.

Some items are common sense. Like when your uncle gave you an unexploded hand grenade after the war. Let's not toss that in the dump, mmkay? Other items are not as obvious so let's look at what the Sioux Falls landfill does not accept:

Propane tanks are not accepted for the obvious reasons. Ker-boom.

Answering machines. If you've been meaning to toss out that old answering machine don't bring it to the landfill. Bring it to a Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1015 East Chambers Street in Sioux Falls.

Ash tree wood. If you've been trimming branches off that ash tree bring the branches and stumps to an approved leaf and branch drop-off or burn it in a safe location. That ash tree bore is a nasty little bug who loves to spread disease.

Strings of holiday lights. If you've pulled a 'Griswold' and couldn't find the faulty bulb, go ahead and bring them to an approved electronics recycling center.

Chlorine bleach, rust remover, rubbing alcohol, antifreeze, biohazardous items, paint, and chemicals are all no-nos at the Sioux Falls landfill. You'll need to take them to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility on E. Chambers St.

CB radios and walkie-talkies. It's been a while since the glorious days of Radio Shack and you may still have some non-working CBs or walkie-talkies. If you want to dispose of them they should not go in your normal garbage bin but rather to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility. In fact, Cable boxes, Calculators, Camcorders, Cameras, CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Players, Microwaves, and Modems are all electronics and must be dropped off at Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

The Sioux Falls landfill welcomes tires...but no rims.

The City of Sioux Falls has an incredibly extensive list here in case you have questions about literally any item and where it should go.

There seems to be some confusion about whether you can bring trash bags to a landfill. They are accepted at most landfills but can take up to 300 years to break down and there really isn't a good solution to this yet.

On a final note...diapers are not recyclable but thanks for asking.

You can call the landfill at (605) 367-8162 for more information. And remember to tie down your load before arriving at the landfill or you'll face a $31 fee.
