Record-Breaking Film Is Sioux Falls’ State Theatre’s Next Freebie
You don't get a lot of opportunities to enjoy a night of free entertainment these days, but you'll have your chance later this month in downtown Sioux Falls.
February 17 is the next Free Monday Movie at the State Theater on Phillips Avenue. Showtime is 7:00 PM.
The event is sponsored by AARP South Dakota.
This month's feature film is 42.
First released in 2013, the movie is based on baseball player Jackie Robinson. He was the first black athlete to play in Major League Baseball when he broke in with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
The title of the film is a reference to Robinson's jersey number, which was universally retired across all MLB teams in 1997
42 stars the late Chadwick Boseman as Robinson and Harrison Ford as Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey.
The film was made for $40 million and grossed $97.5 million at the box office. The film earned $27.5 million for its opening weekend, the best-ever debut for a baseball-themed movie.

The Sioux Falls showing is open to AARP members and non-members alike. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance.
