In theory, Halloween is supposed to be the scariest time of the year. However, living in the Dakotas, I beg to differ, it gets much scarier, especially as we delve deeper into the months of December, January, February, and dare I say March most years.

Here in South Dakota, thanks to Old Man Winter, those four months can be filled with a series of seemingly never-ending nightmares as we're forced to contend with winter storms and below-freezing temperatures, icy, snow-packed roads, fender benders, the list goes on and on.

Here's a little pre-Halloween scare for you, it looks like Mother Nature's fright night is starting early again this year. According to the gang in the Dakota News Now First Alert Weather Center, there's a chance of snow on Saturday, fortunately, the total accumulation doesn't appear too frightening at the moment, only less than half an inch is expected. But still, any sign of white stuff before Halloween is a terrifying sight in my opinion.

It does look like she will definitely be giving all the trick-or-treaters one sure scare on Halloween night, a biting wind chill.

Word has it, the weather guys are predicting the wind chills for Sioux Falls will make the temperature feel 19 degrees outside on Tuesday night when your kiddos are out ringing doorbells.

If you're dressing up for Halloween this year, you might consider going as a space heater, or maybe a curling iron for a little extra added warmth. It's gonna be nippy!

Just be glad you're not living in the other Dakota over the next few days. Have you caught the extended forecast for the western half of North Dakota through Friday?

They are already under a Winter Storm Warning. It looks as if the Bismarck area could receive anywhere from 3 to 11 inches of snow, along with high winds and nighttime temps in the upper teens.

Again, given that it's only October 26th, that sounds much scarier than some big dude wearing a hockey mask chasing you through the forest or Linda Blair hurling green pea soup in your general direction.

What's really scary, a forecast like that won't seem so bad come the middle of January.
