Citywide Mosquito Control Efforts

Mosquito season is back in Sioux Falls, meaning those tiny, whining freeloaders are once again preparing for their annual mission of ruining backyard barbecues, evening walks, and basically any outdoor fun after sunset.

Fortunately, the City of Sioux Falls Mosquito Control Program is also back in action.

The city’s mosquito-fighting efforts run from spring through October and focus on reducing mosquito populations and lowering the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus. South Dakota has historically seen some of the highest per-capita rates of West Nile in the country, so city crews take the battle against these flying vampires pretty seriously.

“Our mosquito control program is focused on reducing the risk of mosquito-borne illness while helping residents enjoy the outdoors safely throughout the summer,” said Jaimie Roggenbauer, the city’s public health program manager.

Targeted Spraying Strategies

Sioux Falls is divided into 20 spray zones that crews monitor daily using mosquito traps and inspections of standing water, otherwise known as luxury mosquito condos. When mosquito numbers spike or test positive for West Nile virus, crews launch targeted spraying operations.

The city says spraying only happens under the right weather conditions and uses EPA-approved treatments considered safe for people, pets, and the environment. The ultra-low-volume sprayers can cover about 300 feet — bad news for mosquitoes who thought they’d found a safe neighborhood.

Stay Informed with Spray Alerts

Residents can sign up for spray alerts and check spray zones through the City of Sioux Falls website.

Officials also encourage residents to dump standing water, wear insect repellent, and remember: the fewer puddles around your yard, the fewer tiny bloodsuckers planning their summer vacation there.
