The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is scaling back its after-hours services, which affects our four-legged friends across the Sioux Empire.

Beginning on Friday, August 1st, staff at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society will no longer accept stray animals after hours. This After-Hours Stray Intake service will be "temporarily paused."

This major policy change was announced in a Facebook post. Recently, the staff at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society has noticed that this service has "been used for unscheduled surrenders." Ideally, staff would love it if residents would schedule surrender appointments to keep them and the other animals safe.

Scheduled surrender appointments allow us to collect important background information, prepare for the animal's arrival, and ensure that we have the staff and space available to meet their needs.
This helps reduce stress and risk for both incoming animals and shelter residents.

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is still accepting strays during business hours. That's not changing.

So, What Do You Do if You want to Send a Stray to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society after hours?

Here's what to do in case you find a stray around the Sioux Empire

  • Check for ID and contact the owner
  • Visit a vet or police station to scan for a microchip (free)
  • Keep the pet safe overnight if possible
  • Post on local Lost & Found pages (Facebook, Petco Love Lost)
  • Contact animal control or law enforcement

There are many four-legged friends at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society looking for homes. Consider adopting one of them...give them a chance! They are good pets looking for a new life. Lists of all adoptable animals can be found here.

Have an interesting pet or looking to get one? Check this out from South Dakota Exotic Animal Laws before you go trying to adopt one.

You will need a zoo permit to harbor a raccoon dog. That's a real species. It's a small wild dog with a black facial mask and long fur, native to the forests of Asia.

20 Things You'll Find In Every South Dakota Home

We have so many things in our homes. Some things are junk or half-used but others have great sentimental value to us.

Regardless of what an item means to us at the end of the day, I bet that most South Dakotans have these twenty items in their home; or at least most of us do.
