First Photo of Earth From the Moon
It was 50 years ago today that mankind saw the Earth rise for the first time.
On August 23, 1966 scientists at NASA received a transmitted image from the Lunar Orbiter 1 spacecraft of Earth rising over the surface of the moon.
It was described as, "A grainy, black-and-white image showing a crescent Earth in a blackened cosmos above the cratered lunar surface."
The Lunar Orbiter 1 was the first American spacecraft to circle the moon, and was sent to photograph possible landing sites for the upcoming Apollo missions.
