Bucky Covington had a big country music hit some years back that began:

We were born to mother's who smoked and drank, Our cribs were covered with lead based paint

And it was true. Those of us that have attained a 'certain age' were born and raised at a time when prenatal care wasn't what it is today. It wasn't uncommon to see pregnant ladies smoking, having a beer or two, and eating pretty much whatever they wanted. It wasn't that they were trying to harm their unborn little Bobby or Sue.

It was, as they say, just the way it was.

Fast forward to 2019 and times have changed.

Now mom's carrying the 'next generation' are finding themselves womb-shamed.

Yahoo Sports is reporting on a particular story about a pregnant woman getting ready to have a cup of coffee. That's when someone she didn't even know began to lecture her on the evils that awaited her in that cup. Basically, the stranger was shaming her for the sin of having coffee while pregnant.

And apparently its happening elsewhere. In the article, another woman was going to have a dish of soft ice cream and found out how awful she was for even thinking of having that while in a 'family way'

So add the phrase to the ever expanding language of our times.

Womb Shaming.

Oh, and by the way, that Bucky Covington song I referenced above? It all turned out fine because most of us Baby Boomer's turned out fine. Turns out we had really good Mom's.
