Sunday is Grandparent’s Day

National Grandparent's Day this year is Sunday, September 10th!

According to Wikipedia, the holiday dates back to the 70s! A woman named Marian McQuade made it her goal for the youth to understand and value the accomplishments and wisdom of the elder community. She also urged them to 'adopt' a grandparent.

Eventually, in 1977, then President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation making the first Sunday after Labor Day, National Grandparent's Day.

The holiday's purpose according to the proclamation is:

"...to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer".

Fun fact: The official flower of National Grandparent's Day is the Forget-Me-Not. It is a purple blue color and blooms the Spring.

The only grandparent I have left is my paternal Grandmother, Ileen. She turned 80 this year. She is a feisty little thing. Sometimes, I don't think she really likes me. She told me I was going to be an 'old maid' and she tells me I talk too much. Both those things may be true, but she doesn't need to say them! Plus, it's my job to talk a lot so I showed her!

Ileen recently had hip surgery, but she'll be back to bossing us around in no time.

Anyway, even though she gives me a hard time I love the lady! I mean, she is my Grandma after all!
