There are a lot of things to dread each year when the holidays roll around, but in the Tri-State Area (South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota), the biggest shopping day of the year isn't one of them.

We know it as Black Friday, which always comes the day after Thanksgiving (November 24 this year) and is the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season each year.

Now a new study from BoohooMAN shows just how crazy we are about Black Friday bargain hunting in the Upper Midwest.

The site tracked just under 100 terms related to Black Friday and sales over the last two years and then used those numbers to calculate the monthly average in each state. They used recent population estimates to factor the averages per 100,000 residents and then ranked the states accordingly.

Both Iowa and Minnesota landed in the top ten.

Shoppers in the Hawkeye State were third overall 1,657 average monthly searches per 100,000 residents. 'Black Friday deals’ is a popular search with 4,590 total searches across the last 12 months.

In the North Star State, there were 1,554 average monthly searches per 100,000 residents. That's the tenth best in the nation. Minnesotans searched for the term ‘When is Black Friday?’ 2,198 times over the last year.

Monthly average searches per 100k

  1. West Virginia: 1,794
  2. Kentucky: 1,697
  3. Iowa: 1,657
  4. Nebraska: 1,633
  5. Missouri: 1,625
  6. Tennessee: 1,612
  7. Indiana: 1,608
  8. Wisconsin: 1,586
  9. Alabama: 1,575
  10. Minnesota: 1,554

South Dakota landed just outside the top ten at 15th overall with 1,486 average monthly searches per 100,000 residents.

Not surprisingly, more than 80 percent of searches occur in November, as shoppers search for the best deals and map out their game plan for the big day.

The study found that searches for ‘fashion trends’ and ‘gaming consoles’ are among those with the highest volume, with ‘fashion trends’ reaching 5,200 average searches each month.
