For the first time in the 132 year history of the Mount Rushmore State, an elected official has been impeached.

According to Dakota News Now, the South Dakota House of Representatives voted to impeach Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg.

After an hour of debate on the house floor, the vote was taken just after noon on Tuesday. The vote was 36 in favor of impeachment and 31 against.

The next step in the process will be a trial in the senate. It will take a two-thirds majority vote to convict him of the impeachment charges.

Since Ravnsborg has been impeached, he is suspended pending the outcome of his senate trial. Chief Deputy Attorney General Charlie McGuigan will handle day-to-day operations in the meantime. Ravnsborg still holds the title of attorney general.

The impeachment charges stem from the incident on September 12, 2020 when Ravnsborg was driving on Highway 14 near Highmore when he struck and killed Joseph Boever while he was walking along the highway.
