According to the latest numbers from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Americans lost more than $12.5 billion to online fraud and scams, with more than 2.5 million people across the country falling victim to these crimes in 2024 alone. While national trends are staggering, internet crimes, like traditional crimes, also affect different areas of the country disproportionately.

To find out which cities are winning, and losing, the fight against scammers and fraudsters, All About Cookies reviewed FTC fraud reports, scam call data, search trends, and more, focusing on seven key metrics:

  • Fraud reports (per capita)
  • Identity theft reports (per capita)
  • Year-over-year change in fraud reports
  • Year-over-year change in identity theft reports
  • Search volume data on scams and fraud:
  • Robocalls per person annually
  • Spam call complaints (per capita)

That research revealed that Sioux Falls is the safest city in America for digital crime.
