The shooting took place near a gas station at Russell Street and Minnesota Avenue when SFPD officers encountered 36-year-old Richard Paul Olson, Jr., of Sioux Falls, who was wanted by federal authorities for violation of his federal probation for possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to police reports, Olson Jr. exited a vehicle and later produced a weapon. Two officers fired their weapons. A gun, believed to be in Olson, Jr.’s possession, was recovered at the scene. The suspect attempted to flee, but a police service dog was deployed and apprehended Olson Jr. He sustained injuries due to dog bites. No one was injured by gunfire.
As part of the investigation, DCI will process the crime scene, conduct a forensic examination of all collected evidence, interview those involved, and review all available video. DCI will issue a summary once the investigation is completed. The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol are assisting DCI. The Sioux Falls Police Department is cooperating in the investigation.
