Minnesota Town Featured On National News For ‘Ice Bowling’

I always thought the only thing you could do similar to bowling on the ice was curling. Both sports rely on precision and hitting targets at the end of a long lane. Apparently, there is actually ice bowling that occurs, and it recently was featured on the CBS Evening News.

They interviewed Les Levin of Long Prairie, Minnesota after hearing about this ice bowling. He owned a bar and restaurant and brought ice bowling to the place years ago. He discovered it in another city and thought it was a fun idea. Why not? When he sold the business, the new owners kept the tradition alive.

How does it work? Pretty simple! They clear off lanes of ice and bank up snow on the side so the ball won't get away from you. Instead of pins on one end, they drill 3-inch deep holes with an ice auger. If the ball stops and rests in a hole, it's worth points. The first person to 15 points wins. We need to try this out!

As you can see, a side-by-side full of bowling balls and a case of Busch Light is about the most Minnesotan thing you could do.

The funny thing is that most people who do it, don't wear gloves. It's too cold in the winter for your hands, so they chuck it just like kids do at a bowling birthday party. Love it!

I can really see this catching on. We are all looking for a way to get out of the house and find a way to distract ourselves from the long, cold winters. Ice bowling appears to be a cheap way to do it! Check out the video from CBS Evening News!
