Look Up! Minnesotans Can Experience A Rare Event Monday Night

Minnesotans are in for a treat next week, and it will give you something to celebrate on a Monday! The next full moon is coming up on Monday, and it's not a normal full moon, in fact, it is a rare type of full moon. It's called a Supermoon Blue Moon, and Minnesotans will be able to enjoy it Monday night, as long as we have clear skies.

According to Space.com "The term "supermoon" was first coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, as "either a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth" according to NASA. Full supermoons are the biggest and brightest full moons of the year, appearing approximately 30% brighter and 14% larger than usual."

But what makes it a blue moon?

Space.com went on to detail that "a seasonal Blue Moon refers to the third full moon in a season that has four full moons. This is the traditional definition of a Blue Moon and the type we will see rise on Aug. 19"

Minnesotans won't be disappointed if they happen to miss out on this supermoon blue moon, as this is the first supermoon in a line of 4 expected to happen over the next few months.

The biggest of these supermoons isn't until October, so you've got some time to find a great moon-watching spot.

The dates, other than Monday's supermoon, are Sept. 17, Oct. 17 and Nov. 15.
