Sioux Falls’ Parks and Recreation Director Don Kearney will retire on April 17 after nearly 21 years of service to the city.

Kearney began his role in July 2005 and has helped guide major growth in the parks system during his time as director.

When Kearney started, Sioux Falls had far fewer parks and amenities. Today, the city has grown to 84 parks, with 17 added under his leadership.

He also helped bring many popular community spaces to life, including recreation centers, trails, and public gathering areas.

Some of the most notable projects completed during his tenure include the Midco Aquatic Center, Levitt at the Falls, and improvements to the city’s bike trail system.

He also oversaw renovations to parks and pools, along with upgrades to golf courses and clubhouses.

Mayor Paul TenHaken praised Kearney for his long service and leadership, saying his work helped shape many of the city’s most valued spaces.

Kearney said he has always appreciated the strong community support for parks and recreation programs.

Today, the department includes 91 full-time staff and about 800 seasonal workers. It has also received national accreditation several times, showing a high level of quality and service.

Kearney said now is the right time to step aside and allow new leadership to continue building on the department’s success.

Assistant Director Brett Kollars will serve as interim director while the city searches for a replacement.
