Airport Expansion Plans Are Taking Off In Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls continues to grow at a record pace; as a result, the city's airport, the largest in the state, needs to start expanding as well.

On Tuesday, July 15, the Sioux Falls City Council took steps to help make that a reality in the coming months.

Dakota News Now is reporting that the council approved a $5 million loan to the Sioux Falls Airport Authority to help support the necessary expansion at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport.

The vote Tuesday night was unanimous, 7-0 in favor of the expansion.

What are the next steps?

The city of Sioux Falls will provide $5 million from the city's reserve fund, provided the Airport Authority obtains approval for airport revenue bonds, and the state of South Dakota kicks in at least $5 million in a loan, grant, or subsidy.

The Sioux Falls Regional Airport is looking to add an additional four gates to the already seven gates now in place.

According to Dakota News Now, the city attorney’s office will start working with the Airport Authority on the terms of the agreement, including repayment.

Over the past year, the Sioux Falls Regional Airport has already begun to receive a facelift. Back in October of 2024, the airport opened up a brand new 1,000-space parking ramp, complete with a skywalk that connects the ramp to the main terminal.

That move has given the Sioux Falls Regional Airport a more big-city feel and appearance. The proposed gate expansion will help take things to yet another level, along with adding more travel and convenience opportunities.

Should the proposed move get clearance for takeoff, construction on the gate expansions could begin as early as August, with a total construction time of 18 to 24 months predicted.
