Sharp Looking Little Fella Spotted in Downtown Aberdeen Tuesday Morning

Here's something you don't see every day, especially on the streets of a South Dakota city.

A porcupine was spotted roaming the streets of downtown Aberdeen early Tuesday morning (August 1).

Dakota News Now reports that Aberdeen police were summoned to the downtown area when someone spotted the prickly little fella patrolling the streets of the Hub City during the middle of the night.

According to Dakota News Now, authorities were able to nab the sharp-looking little dude without incident and relocate him outside the city limits.

Word has it, he answers to the name of "Spike." Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Aberdeen police posted the following message on Facebook after their run-in with the rodent. "This little guy decided it was too nice of a night to stay home. He was out well past curfew downtown last night. Fortunately, we were able to help him find his way home in a tree strip outside of town."

Porcupines are not all that common in eastern South Dakota. According to the Game Fish and Parks Department, we do have a few roaming around the state, but they typically can be found hanging around west of the Missouri River.

Porcupines like to live in areas that contain a heavy concentration of tree branches. They often can be spotted moving very slowly through wooded areas nibbling on tree bark.

Here in the U.S., the vast majority of porcupines can be found in states like New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, and the states located in the New England region of the country.
