Spring Clean Your Medicine Cabinet With Prescription Take-Back Day
If you have unused or expired medications in your home, this is your opportunity to safely dispose of them. Prescription drugs are only safe when they are used by the person they were prescribed to.
Keeping these drugs in your home can lead to deadly consequences or addiction. Twice a year the South Dakota Department of Social Services along with the Drug Enforcement Administration hosts "Prescription Take Back Day". The next one is this Saturday, April 27.
This day provides the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted, unneeded, or unused and expired medications without question in secure medication drop boxes at participating locations.
Here in Sioux Falls, there are multiple locations where you can safely dispose of medications including:
- All of the Hy-Vee pharmacies
- All of the Lewis Drug pharmacies
- Avera 69th Street Pharmacy
- Avera 7th Avenue Pharmacy
- Avera McKennan Campus Pharmacy
- Avera Specialty Pharmacy
- Sanford Hematology Oncology Clinic Pharmacy
- True Care Family Pharmacy - 1120 E. 10th Street
- Sioux Falls Police Department- 320 W. 4th Street
You can also order a free Dispose RX packet that chemically neutralizes prescription medications when mixed with water. These work with pills, tablets, capsules, liquids, and powders.
