The saying "children are our future" isn't just a saying. It's truth. You may wonder sometimes what Sioux Falls Youth are interested in besides hanging out with friends, texting, tik-toking, listening to their tunes, etc.

The truth is, that there are plenty of young people who not only care about the future for themselves, but for everyone.

Lots of them live right here in Sioux Falls. And these are the kids that the Sioux Falls Mayor's Youth Council is looking to recruit.

The Mayor’s Youth Council is an excellent opportunity for Sioux Falls juniors and seniors to develop their leadership skills and make a difference in their community.

Applications for the 2023-2024 Council are open and have been extended to Friday, May 5, 2023. This move was made to allow students more time to apply for a chance to share their input on community issues and learn about the city government.

The Youth Council will meet monthly during the school year, in addition to other activities and volunteer events, providing an excellent platform for the students to contribute positively to the city.

Members will have the opportunity to connect with Mayor Paul TenHaken and other city leaders while touring City facilities like the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill, the water purification plant, and the new Public Safety Campus set to open this fall.

The application process is simple and involves providing basic information about the applicant, answering several short-answer questions, and getting a letter of recommendation from a teacher or school staff member.

The City’s planning team understands that the end of the school year can be a busy time for students and teachers and has extended the deadline to Friday, May 5, 2023.

The Mayor’s Youth Council aims to create an inclusive environment that welcomes students from all educational backgrounds, including private, public, and home-schooled students.

Being part of the Mayor’s Youth Council is a great way to gain new experiences, and also to make new friends, and become a part of something larger than themselves.

Interested students can find the application form online at www.siouxfalls.org/myc.

12 Businesses That Would Do Great in Sioux Falls' Abandoned Gordmans Building

For thirty years the people of Sioux Falls saw the sign for Gordmans off-price department store across the parking lot from the Empire Mall.

In September of 2020, the store closed for its final time. Since then the building has sat empty, something that doesn't happen too often in Sioux Falls.

We were wondering what people in Sioux Falls would like to see take over the space. Some folks wanted their Gordmans back. It was a great place to find deals on clothing. But, all the Gordmans are gone, so that's a no-go.

And since we've gotten our Chick Fil A and Chipotle, the city is primed for another thing to line up for.
