A 27-year-old Brookings South Dakota man is behind bars for producing and passing a number of counterfeit bills over the past several weeks.

Dakota News Now is reporting that Julian Huffman of Brookings was taken into custody by Brookings police officers and members of the U.S. Secret Service Department on Monday (November 21).

The report states that Huffman fled as police attempted to apprehend him leaving his residence in southwest Brookings on Monday. Authorities caught up with him a short time later and took him into custody. At that time, Huffman had methamphetamine and an altered check on him. Police also discovered that Huffman had a prior arrest warrant for a federal probation violation for accessory to bank robbery in Nebraska during his arrest.

According to Dakota News Now, observant citizens played a huge role in helping authorities to identify Huffman.

During his interrogation, Huffman admitted to producing funny money and passing nearly thirty counterfeit $20.00 bills in the Brookings and Volga South Dakota area over the past several weeks.

In a search of Huffman's residence, authorities also found counterfeit money and supplies used to make counterfeit cash.

Dakota News Now reports that Huffman was also charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of an Altered Check, and his outstanding federal arrest warrant.

The U.S. Secret Service Department plans to present federal charges against Huffman to the US Attorney’s office for making and passing counterfeit bills.

Up to this point, authorities have recovered twenty-eight counterfeit $20 bills as the investigation into Huffman continues.
