South Dakota's minimum wage will rise in 2024.

On January 1, South Dakota's minimum wage will rise from $10.80 an hour to $11.20 an hour. Well, unless you're a tipped employee, then the minimum is now $5.60 per hour.

What is the minimum wage in South Dakota in 2024?

"These increases will also bring important benefits to working families. More than a quarter (25.8%) of affected workers are parents, or more than 2.5 million people. In total, 5.6 million children live in households where an individual will receive a minimum wage increase," - Economic Policy Institute.

The 40-cent change comes thanks to a law that South Dakota voters approved in 2014 that requires the state's minimum wage to rise with the cost of living. An estimated 38,300 South Dakotans will be affected by the change in 2024.

The minimum wages in Minnesota and Nebraska will also increase in 2024. In Minnesota, it rises 26 cents to $10.85. In the Husker State, it'll be $12.00, that's up a buck and a half.

In 2023 the five states with the highest minimum wages were:

  1. Washington, D.C. - $17.00
  2. Washington  - $15.74
  3. California - $15.50
  4. Massachusetts - 15.00
  5. New York $14.20

In 2023 the states with the lowest minimum wages were:

20 states, including Iowa, require that workers be paid at least the federal minimum wage of $7.25.
