As you can imagine, the alert immediately started creating quite a buzz on social media, sending a few folks into a slow panic. Some were even questioning the strength of the system.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety was aware of the situation and sent a smartphone notification around 8:30 PM, saying 911 phone lines were down throughout South Dakota. In addition to South Dakota, a report from KLKN-TV in Nebraska says this outage also affected Nebraska.
Within an hour, South Dakota 911 systems were mainly back up and running in the state including Sioux Falls.
This is the second time the 911 Emergency Systems have failed in about three months. The 911 outage in April affected not just South Dakota, but also Nebraska, Nevada, and Texas.
