As a pet owner, sometimes you have to make tough decisions. However, those decisions shouldn't include abandoning your pet in the middle of a South Dakota field.

Police with the Davison County Sheriff's Office received a disturbing call about five dogs being "dumped" in a field in Mitchell, South Dakota.

The dogs appear to be young doodles. These poor dogs were left in a field close to the intersection of 397th Avenue and 258th Street, along with two metal crates. At first, officers only managed to safely catch four of the dogs, with the fifth pup running away. The heartbreaking mission was shared in a Facebook post.

As devastating as this sounds, there is light at the end of this dark tunnel for all the pups. Dakota Dog Rescue Services in Yale, South Dakota, took the dogs in as part of their rescue.

But wait...there's more good news for the missing South Dakota dog.

Dakota Dog Rescue Services took it upon themselves to find the fifth dog. Thanks to their efforts and those around the community, the fifth dog was safely captured over the weekend.

Four girls and one boy are in this playful family. Once these dogs knew they were safe and loved, officials with Dakota Dog Rescue Services say "their personalities start to shine."

At some point, the dogs will be available for adoption. For now, these dogs are getting the care they need and the love they truly deserve.

This is another gut-wrenching example of animal cruelty in our South Dakota neighborhoods.

There are always other options for pet owners who feel lost. Animals should not suffer like this.

Thank you, Davison County Sheriff's Office and Dakota Dog Rescue Services, for giving these dogs a second chance at life. They feel seen because of you.
