A Minnesota FBI Case With Global Ties

What makes this story especially chilling is how close it came to playing out right here at home. Federal agents say a 23-year-old from Minneapolis wasn’t just posting online, he was preparing to act, and his plans stretched far beyond Minnesota’s borders.

The Minneapolis Office of the FBI became aware of Abdisatar Ahmed Hassan after a tip led them to social media posts supporting Al Shabab and later ISIS. Both organizations have been designated by the Secretary of State as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

Minneapolis FBI Tracking and Arrest

According to federal investigators, Hassan used social media in Minnesota to promote jihad, praise terrorist attacks, and communicate with ISIS recruiters. In December 2024, he tried twice to travel one-way to Somalia to join ISIS. Both attempts failed, but the FBI was already watching.

When agents searched his phone, they found conversations with an ISIS recruiter Hassan referred to as “uncle” and “commander.” In February 2025, Hassan posted videos while driving, flashing an open knife in one and showing an ISIS flag in another.

By the end of that month, agents arrested him and found explosive instruction manuals, sniper training guides, and more ISIS communications. Hassan later admitted to supporting ISIS and pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist group.

FBI Minneapolis Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. stressed that keeping Minnesota safe from those who support terrorism is a top priority.
